John Cheever quarantacinquenne riceve il National Book Award per The Waspshot Chronicle. Nel breve discorso sottolinò quanto segue a proposito del romanzo:

(the novel is) one of the few form where we can record man’s complexity and the strenght and strength and decency oh his longings, where we can describe, step by step, minute by minute, out not altogether unpleasant struggle tu put ourselves into a viable and devout relationshit to our beloved and mistaken world
