I had no idea if what I was saying as accurate – I was making it up as I went along – but I carried on regardless. "Not surprisingly then, this view is improved by – in fact, almost demands – the sight of people toiling in its midst, actively engaged in its creation and preservation. It's like that bit in Jean de Florette or  Manon des Sources when Gerard Depardieu asks a peasant if he likes the view. The peasant doesn't know what he's talking about. You have to be a stranger to the the landscape to regard it as a view.
